How should you free Android memory?

Everyone has had to deal with it, your phone is full! Certainly the cheaper Android phones have less storage space available, making the memory quickly full. But how do you get rid of this report? How should you free Android memory?

1. Empty the cache memory

Before you start something, we recommend first emptying the cache memory. Buffer files (such as cookies in the browser, recently opened websites, etc.) are stored within the cache memory and are stored temporarily to start the app or website more quickly. Therefore, removing cache memory can not hurt; however, it may cause the apps to start slower the first time. With the Android memory release cache memory is a good first step to get a lot of extra space. We recommend, however, to repeat this with some regularity; After all, the cache memory will fill up over time.

CCleaner: To remove the cache memory go to ' Settings> Apps> Application management> [select app]> Empty cache'. But you can also do this faster with a program that treats multiple apps simultaneously. A nice app is for example CCleaner. This app analyzes all the cache memory with which you get back the storage memory extra quickly.

2. Back up your photos and videos

If you still suffer from a full phone after emptying the cache memory, it is time to back up the photos and / or videos. You do not always view all photos, but do not want to discard everything right away. Therefore, make a selection of photos that you can back up on the computer and which you keep on the phone. You can also look at a good cloud solution  so that you can consult the photos online, without having them physically on the phone. Click here for the 5 best Cloud Apps.

WeTransferTo back up the photos, you can simply transfer pictures from the phone to the computer with the USB cable. But you can also use apps like WeTransfer. This app can, just as on the computer, mail up to 10GB of photos. This is very simple: you select the photos, enter an email address and you receive the download link to your photos in the mail. To quickly select multiple photos, tap once on the first photo and double on the last photo and then all intermediate photos will be selected.

3. Move all data to the SD card

Do you know where your files are saved by default? If it is possible for your phone, we recommend storing everything on the SD card. Expandable memory is no longer self-evident on Android devices; some phones (like the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge ) no longer have this option. Instead, these smartphones have more and extra fast internal storage.

If the phone does have a port for an SD card, we recommend buying a memory card. Go when choosing an SD cardfor a so quick to recognize potential card is the number in the circle on the front. We recommend to go at least for a class 6 or higher. This way you can free Android memory, without it taking a long time to load the (large) files. Click here for our SD cards.

With some phones you then have to indicate separately that you use an SD card as the standard storage method of the photos. This can be done via ' Camera> Settings> Storage location> Memory card '. Then there is a chance that you still have files on the phone memory, which you obviously want on the SD card. Go to ' My Files> [choose type of file]> three dots at the top right> Select> select all photos with the box at the top left> Move> SD card'.

  • Files to SD card on new devices:
  • Files to SD card on older devices:

You can also partially place apps on the SD card. Go to ' Settings> Apps> Application management> [select app]> Move to SD card' . Note: in this case you only put part of the app on the SD card, since an app must be on the phone to boot properly. But every bit helps!

4. No SD card? No problem!

Even if your phone does not support an SD card, you can still free up memory with handy accessories. SanDisk has released the Dual Drive and the Connect especially for a quick backup. The Dual Drive is best compared with a USB stick for the smartphone. The stick comes with 16GB of storage and has a micro USB connection in addition to the standard USB connection. This allows you to simply click the stick under the phone and back up files.

But there is also a wireless solution to always have memory at hand. The SanDisk Connect is a small NAS server the size of a USB stick that can be connected to a computer or smartphone (iOS and Android). You connect the device via the Wi-Fi network of the Connect to your phone or computer and you can get started right away! These files can be found in the app, can be played directly and even be shared via e-mail or WhatsApp. You just put the stick in your bag and you always have all the files with you. And to clean up your smartphone there is an extra advantage: when you put photos on the stick, you can choose to delete these files directly from your own device. The stick is the only thing you need.

5. Save up WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a wonderful program to send free text messages. But the messaging service is also used to send large numbers of photos and videos. Especially in the WhatsApp groups, a lot of nonsense pictures and movies are shared. You can choose not to download these photos and videos automatically. Go to ' WhatsApp> 3 dots at the top right> Settings> Chats and calls> Media autom. download> turn everything off ' . Then you have control over which media you download and view.

When you are in a chat that you know many photos are shared, we recommend to delete the old photos and videos. Go to ' WhatsApp> [chat where a lot is shared]>  3 dots at the top right> Media in Group> Keep images pressed> Trash' .

6. Remove the apps that you do not use

Perhaps this tip is obvious, but do you use all the apps you have on the phone? Many people have different versions of many apps, while they only use one. It's time to be critical and remove apps from time to time! This can be done through the settings, but also via the Google Play Store. Go to ' Play Store> 3 dashes top left> My apps and games> Select app> Delete .

Via the Application Management you can also remove apps, and immediately see how much memory the app will use. Go to ' Settings> Apps> Application management' . To remove an app, tap a program and press ' Clear data ' and then ' Delete '.

7. Turn off automatic updates

To keep more control over what's on the phone, you can also turn off automatic software updates from apps. Then your memory no longer runs unnoticed with new versions of your programs. Go to  'Google Play> 3 dashes top left> Settings> Automatically update apps> Do not update apps automatically' .

8. Disable apps

Unfortunately, not all apps can be discarded. Some apps that you hardly use are embedded in the software. You can disable these apps to prevent them from starting in the background. Then this app will also no longer appear in the cache memory. To disable apps, go to Settings> Apps> Application manager> All> [tap an app]> Remove updates> Forced Stop> Disable . Also check " Show notifications" if you no longer want to receive notifications of updates.

Note: this is not recommended with every app. Some programs are necessary to keep Android running. If you do not know what an app is for, you should not turn it off. This certainly applies to the apps with a green Android icon (the system programs).

If you do not know what an app is for, find it first before you turn it off. Apps like Samsung Print Service Plug In, Chat-On, S-Voice, Samsung Push Service, Samsung GO, and apps like Flipboard can  be turned off without any problems.

9. Empty the system log files

If you have tried all of the above and still have a (too) full phone, you can also look deeper into the system. With Samsung phones you can free Android memory by removing the so-called Dumpstate / Logcat files. These are error logs that are stored in the internal memory when, for example, an app crashes.

To delete these files go to Phone and key in the code  * # 9900 # . At that moment the secret SysDump menu appears. Then press the second button ' Delete Dumpstate / Logcat'. Then restart the phone and you suddenly have a lot more space on the phone!
